A Yorkshire-based waste exporter, PMAC Energy, has unveiled plans for what it says will be a £250 million waste to energy plant at Redcar Bulk Terminal (RBT).
The firm has secured 25 acres of the terminal’s land for the development, which it claims, could create up to 400 local jobs at the heart of the South Tees Development Corporation site.

Subject to permitting and planning approvals, the plant will take in municipal and commerical waste and also produce waste fuels for export, the company said, adding that it would “start generating power in 2021”.

Founded in 2012 by managing director Robert Lewis, PMAC Energy claims to be the largest privately-owned supplier of waste derived fuels to Finland.
When contacted by letsreycle.com, Mr Lewis said the company mainly exports wood waste to Finland and Denmark but will be exporting larger quantities of refuse derived fuel (RDF) over the coming years.
Garry O’Malley, the bulk terminal’s general manager, said “Today’s announcement is hugely significant, not only for our businesses but for the whole South Tees region. We’ve worked closely with PMAC Energy on this project for a number of years and it’s another reflection of the continued resurgence of Redcar Bulk Terminal and this site.”
RDF
Up to 500,000 tonnes of refuse derived fuels (RDF) would pass through the plant each year with 150,000 tonnes of this exported to cement and energy plants across the world, the company reports.
The development would feature a materials recovery facility (MRF) on the frontend to sort the incoming material.
“Projects like this – which could bring hundreds of millions of pounds and many valuable jobs to Teesside – are heralding the start of a new era for RBT and our employees,” Mr O’Malley said. “These are exciting times and we look forward to working with PMAC Energy to deliver renewable energy to power the future economic success of this site and this region.”

Redcar MP Anna Turley commented: “This is another big investment project in our area which builds on our existing strengths in energy generation and waste management, and crucially creates new skilled jobs for people in our area.
