Viridor has released an update on its energy recovery facility (ERF) in Beddington, Sutton, explaining that the £205 million plant is “expected to become operational in autumn 2018”.
The facility will remian in Viridor’s control as part of the terms of its contract with the South London Waste Partnership
The site, which will 275,000 tonnes per year, was due to be operational in August 2018 with the facility to treat 95% of all residual waste for the South London Waste Partnership (SLWP) once it comes online.
Viridor has a contract for the transport and management of residual waste for the SLWP, which it won in 2012. This covers Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton boroughs.
The contract involves Viridor designing, building and operating the ERF, which will remain in its ownership and through which it will dispose of municipal residual waste arising in the SWLP area.
Commissioning
Viridor confirmed that the site is currently in commissioning, which will see all components tested in isolation “to ensure they will operate within stringent permitted standards”. As part of this, SLWP vehicles are also being tested over the weighbridges, ready for its final operational date later this year.
Once operational, the site will generate enough power for more than 30,000 homes.
Joint committee meeting
Last month, the SLWP met for a joint committee meeting to discuss the Partnership’s performance, which included evaluating the facility, which it granted planning permission for in 2012.

The SLWP also said that once online, the facility will help the partnership achieve a 95% diversion from landfill rate. Currently, this stands at 21%, with 46,000 tonnes of residual waste diverted from landfill via the Lakeside ERF in Slough, which is also owned by Viridor. The remaining approximate 150,000 tonnes goes to landfill.
Lagan Construction group
In February 2018, four companies owned by Lagan Construction, one of the contractors working on the facility, went into administration. Lagan had begun construction work on the site in December 2015 (see letsrecycle.com story)
Viridor said at the time of Lagan’s entry into administration that the facility was “already in commissioning” and no changes to the timeline [August 2018] were expected.
