Quercus appoints Pearson to senior advisory board

Quercus Corporate Finance has announced the appointment of Jo Pearson to its senior advisory board, which follows the appointment of Mark Whelan as a partner last year.

The firm said this latest senior appointment endorses its position of financial advisor of choice for businesses in the waste management, recycling and industrial sectors.

Mr Pearson spent 30 years building up the family business, Pearsons Group, to become one of the leading waste management and recycling businesses in East Anglia. The business invested heavily in state of the art, strategically located facilities in the region, and, according to Quercus, was one of the first to develop multi plastics segregation and subsequent export. Having acquired five complementary businesses, Pearsons Group was sold to Viridor in 2010.

Mr Pearson is a Member of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, was a board member of Recoup and also sat on WRAP’s construction recycling committee.

Commenting on the appointment, Nick Standen, Quercus Chairman, said: “I am delighted that Jo has decided to join us. His sector knowledge combined with Mark’s means that we can now offer our clients a unique proposition; 55 years’ experience of the waste and recycling sector.”


Recolight board appoints new chair

The UK WEEE compliance scheme for the lighting industry, Recolight, has announced the appointment of a new chair.

Martin de Jager has been appointed to chair of the Recolight board

Martin de Jager, international board member of Philips Lighting has been a director of Recolight Ltd for the last two years. Mr de Jager has been in the lighting industry for over 30 years.

He took over as char from April 2018, replacing Andreas Adam, senior director at LEDvance who has been board chair for the last two years. Mr Adam will remain on the Recolight board.

Other directors of Recolight are Steven Reed, deal manager of Current, powered by GE, and Bridget Anderson, financial controller of Feilo Sylvania.

Recolight chief executive, Nigel Harvey said: “Recolight are delighted that Martin de Jager has taken on the role of Chair.  His wide-ranging knowledge of both WEEE and lighting is invaluable to us.  The board are also very grateful for professionalism and dedication that Andreas Adam brought to the role.  His experience of WEEE in a number of countries helps to support the continued growth of Recolight, and the standards on which our reputation is founded.”


Dr Adam Read elected as CIWM’s junior vice president

Dr Adam Read has been elected as CIWM’s incoming junior vice president, a role he will assume in October 2018.

Dr Read, who is director of external affairs at SUEZ, has more than 20 years’ experience in the resource and waste sector including roles as a local authority officer, consultant and also an academic.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Read explained his passion for “all things waste and resources” will enable him to bring a lot of enthusiasm and appetite for change to the role.

“I believe I am the first of the original ‘new generation group’ from the late 1990s that has made it to top table and I believe I can bring a lot to the role including enthusiasm, an appetite for change and innovation, and a commercial perspective that will be key as the institution adjusts to the changing shape and demands of the sector and the professionals working in it.”

Dr Adam Read will assume his role when Enda Kiernan replaces Dr David Wilson as CIWM President.


Renewi appoints non-executive director 

A former leader of the Dutch Green Party, Jolande Sap, has been appointed to the board of Renewi plc as non-executive director. She has also become a member of Renewi’s Remuneration and Nomination Committees.

Ms Sap is currently on the Board of the Netherlands National Green Fund, a member of the supervisory boards of KPMG (Netherlands), Royal KPN N.V. and the Springtij Forum. She chairs the supervisory boards of the Netherlands Public Health Federation, Arkin – a mental health care institution and Fairfood International. She is also involved in a number of social initiatives, including chairing the Board of the Dutch Sustainable Fashion Week.

Between 2008 and 2012, Ms Sap represented the Dutch Green Party, GroenLinks, in the lower house of the Dutch parliament, during the last two years of which she was party leader.

Commenting on the appointment, Renewi plc Chairman, Colin Matthews CBE, stated: “We are delighted to have secured the appointment of Jolande. Operating in a highly regulated sector and with increasing Governmental focus on recycling policy and the Circular Economy Jolande’s experience will provide the Renewi Board with an additional and valuable perspective.”
