LondonEnergy adds electric cars to its fleet
LondonEnergy has introduced two BMW i3 electric cars at its EcoPark HQ in Edmonton, north London.
The company say the move “demonstrates its continued commitment to reducing CO2 and NOx emissions in London”.
LondonEnergy (formerly London Waste) is wholly owned by the North London Waste Authority and is contracted to provide waste management services to its seven North London boroughs.
The company has also installed four charging points at their EcoPark site to ensure EV availability, and the energy is sourced from the household waste generated at their energy recovery facility.
Peter Sharpe, Managing Director of LondonEnergy, commented: “This is a key step for the company in reducing air pollution and carbon emissions, and we are pleased to support the future of a cleaner, greener and more sustainable environment.”
The car provides a travel range of 125 miles from a single charge and is manufactured using 100% energy from renewable sources, runs exclusively on battery power, and 95% of the materials used to produce the car are recyclable.
The cars are available for company staff to use when travelling to meetings, visiting customers and on any other general company business.
Viridor in Wigan contract renewal
Viridor has confirmed the renewal of a contract with Wigan metropolitan borough council from the beginning of the year for 12 months to treat dry mixed recyclables at its Warth Road MRF. The company originally secured the contract in 2015.
Viridor business development manager Simon Wright explained that Viridor runs for the collection, haulage and recycling of Wigan’s brown bin dry mixed recycling from the Council’s depot at Makerfield Way, Wigan.
The Warth MRF will receive in the region of 16,000 tonnes of comingled dry mixed recycling per annum, including glass, plastics and cans from Wigan for processing into high quality commodities and sale into recycling markets.
Paul Barton, director for environment at Wigan Council, said: “The quality of the proposed service from Viridor will provide an absolute guarantee that this waste is being effectively recycled for our residents.”
Recycling award scheme in Epping Forest ‘successful’
The organisers of a scheme in Epping Forest which hopes to increase recycling by offering individual prizes, charity donations and local discounts has said the scheme has so far been successful.
Epping Forest Recycling Rewards was launched in partnership with the council last September during National Recycling Week.
Since then, the organiser have said hundreds of residents and 75 local Epping businesses have signed up.
“We’re really happy to be a part of the scheme,” said business owner, Amy. “We like that it encourages reducing waste, which is something that’s really important to us as a business. It’s also great that we get featured on the Recycling Rewards website, app and social media, which raises our profile in the local area and brings in more businesses for us. It’s a win-win!”
Every resident that signs up to the scheme will receive an Epping Forest Discount Card in the post that gives you access to discounts and special offers across a broad range of Epping Forest independent retailers.
Bakers Basco launches bread basket return scheme
Bakers Basco has launched a free collection service from anywhere in the UK for foodbanks and charities which end up stuck with the baskets and dollies used to deliver food.
The company said that with retailers and food firms increasing the amount of unsold food donated to homeless shelters, food banks and similar not-for-profit operations, a large number of its bread baskets and dollies end up with charities.
Dollies are the wheeled trolleys used to move the baskets. And, along with the baskets themselves, are largely ending up with the charities as opposed to being returned to the bakeries which have paid to rent them.
Bakers Basco was set up by five of the UK’s leading plant bakers (Allied Bakeries, Fine Lady Bakeries, Frank Roberts & Sons, Hovis and Warburtons) in 2006 to buy, manage and police the use of a standard basket for the delivery of bread to retailers and wholesalers.
