Ecover launches 100% recycled PET plastic bottles

By 16/02/2018News

Belgian-owned Ecover has launched a washing up liquid bottle made of 100% recycled PET plastic bottles sourced from across Europe.

The launch is part of Ecover’s pledge to use only 100% recycled plastic in all of its bottles by 2020, and to trial the use of alternative bio-degradable and bio sourced packaging, to help reduce its dependency on plastic.

Ecover’s latest campaign comes almost five years on from its launch of plastic bottles which were to use plastics collected from the North Sea (see letsrecycle.com story)

Ecover sell a range of cleaning products claimed as “environmentally friendly” across Europe and the US; last year it had revenues of over £150 million.

The new bottle is available across supermarkets in the UK and is also completely transparent, and so, said the company, can be easily recycled back into clear PET bottles.

Commenting on the launch of the new bottle, David Kennedy, director of product experience at Ecover, said that it has been a difficult process to get this far. “We’ve worked tirelessly to create a 100% recycled plastic bottle that is both durable and functional, and this hasn’t been without its challenges. We designed, modelled and tested multiple iterations of the bottle until we were satisfied with the final product, and we’re excited to launch it”.

The Belgian company has also reduced the level of plastic in its caps, with an estimated saving of 14 tonnes of polypropylene plastic annually from the manufacturing process.

The bottles have been designed in-house at Ecover, created in Germany and Switzerland and filled in Ecover’s factory in Belgium.

“By choosing PET plastic we have been able to improve the squeezing of the bottle as we know that people want to get every last drop,” added Ryan McSorley, designer at Ecover. He argued that the company has proved that “aesthetics should not be a constraint for industry to use more recycled content”.

Last year, Ecover joined several other companies in pledging to increase its use of recycled plastic over the next three years. Later this year the brand will introduce recycled content into its caps for the first time, and by 2020 Ecover has pledged that all its bottles will contain 100% recycled plastic.

Last month, Coca-Cola pledged to “continue to focus on developing 100-percent recyclable packaging and reducing the amount of plastic in its bottles” (see letsrecycle.com story).
