Scottish waste management firm Lowmac Waste & Recycling has purchased the former Energos site at Irvine which had planning permission for a 120,000 tonne per annum energy from waste plant.

The deal follows the 3.5 acre site, at the Oldhall West Industrial Estate, being put up for sale last year in the wake of the demise of Energos, which went into administration in 2016.
Now, Lowmac – which is based in Irvine, south west of Glasgow – is seeking a technology partner to help develop the facility. Waste will come largely from Lowmac’s adjacent waste and recycling site where currently residual material is prepared for export as RDF.
When the plant was originally planned, Energos estimated that the area produced around 300,000 tonnes of MSW and ‘suitable’ C&I waste. And, it was also noted that the plant would be sited near to a production facility run by pharmaceuticals firm GSK which was a potential user of steam/condensate from the facility.

Robert Hall, director of Lowmac, told letsrecycle.com: “We are delighted to acquire the site which we will be looking to develop for an energy from waste plant. We are now looking for a reputable partner to help develop the energy plant.”
Lowmac currently operates on an 11 acre site in Irvine handling 135,000 tpa of waste and recyclables. Mr Hall noted: “We process all waste streams including C&I, recyclables and hazardous waste. Our facilities include a dirty MRF and we produce significant volumes of RDF.”

Mr Hall added that the plan currently is that the company would produce a blend of waste for the energy from waste plant from municipal and C&I waste.
Municipal
The company also has a dockside site and is involved in the municipal side with a contract to run the Newton Mearns HWRC for Renfrewshire council.
And, it is investing on the equipment plant with new plant and vehicles delivered or arriving in 2018 including a Liebherr 550 and LH22, five MAN skiploaders and an Eggersman shredder.
