A second fire involving waste plastics at a site previously operated by V10 Polymers in Blackburn has broken out in a matter of weeks.
Over 70 firefighters from across Lancashire are dealing with the fire at the derelict building on Paterson Street, which started in the early hours of this morning (28 September).
Efforts to tackle the fire are ongoing. According to Lancashire Fire and Rescue, the fire involves a building ‘approximately 160 metres by 100 metres’.
This is the second fire to take place the former V10 Polymers facility in recent weeks.
Investigation
Last month the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service launched an investigation into the cause of a fire involving 100 tonnes of material at the site on Patterson Street. (see letsrecycle.com story)
In a statement released this morning, the Fire and Rescue Service said: “There are 10 fire engines and an aerial ladder platform at the scene and firefighters are using water from the nearby canal to extinguish the fire.”
“Local residents have been evacuated to Ivy Community Centre and other residents not evacuated have been told to stay indoors and keep windows and doors shut. Several local roads have been closed and they will be closed for the next few hours.”
Lancashire Police
On a post on the social media site Facebook, Lancashire Police, confirmed it is assisting the Fire & Rescue Service with the ‘large scale’ fire.
The Police have advised the public to avoid the area and domestic properties in the immediate area to keep doors and windows closed due to the ‘large amount of smoke’ in the area.

Liquidation
It has emerged that V10 Polymers went into liquidation earlier this year with debts of £1.25 million. The business was owned by David Holt of Comberbach, Northwich and Brian Holt of Old Langho, Blackburn.
The two owners had an interest in earlier years in Holt & MacIntosh (Waste Plastics) and more recently in Holts Developments Ltd of Blackburn which went into liquidation last year.
In August, Gareth Howarth, liquidator of V10 Polymers confirmed that the business no longer traded and explained that the land holding the plastics was owned by Holts Development which was in liquidation through Begbies Traynor.
Environment Agency
Today, the Environment Agency confirmed it has been working with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and Blackburn and Darwen Council following a fire at a site on Paterson Street in the early hours of this morning.
A spokesperson for the Agency said: “Environment Officers are currently on site to monitor and minimise any potential impacts of the fire on the environment.
“We are continuing to work with Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service, the Police and Blackburn and Darwen Council to protect people and the environment.”
When contacted by letsrecycle.com, a spokesperson for Blackburn and Darwen council confirmed the fire had taken place at the facility previously operated by V10 Polymers.
In its statement today, the Fire and Rescue Service said that no injuries were reported and firefighters will remain at the scene for most of the day.
