Birmingham RCV involved in fatal collision

A schoolgirl has died in a collision between a minicoach and a Birmingham city council refuse collection vehicle (RCV) at Kingsbury Road, Castle Vale, Birmingham this morning (7 July). [updated 14:30]

Emergency services were called around 9am to Kingsbury Road where the 14-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was called to Kingsbury Road and sent two ambulances, three paramedic officers, a senior paramedic officer, the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response team and the Midlands Air Ambulance Crew from Cosford in a rapid response car to the scene.

Injuries

Three teachers and 20 other pupils were also on board the coach. One pupil was taken to hospital with superficial injuries and several others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The white refuse collection vehicle is part of the Birmingham city council fleet. A statement from the city council [updated] said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of a teenage girl this morning on Kingsbury Road and our thoughts are with her family, friends and all those affected. As a City Council trade waste vehicle was involved in the incident we will be fully co-operating with all investigations.”

The statement continued: “We ask for drivers’ patience while we work with the Police to deal with the highways implications in this very sensitive situation.”

Investigation

“Both drivers are assisting police with this investigation,” said a statement from West Midlands Police

Superintendent Dean Hatton, head of the Central Motorway Police Group, said: “This is a tragic incident which has resulted in the death of a pupil from the John Taylor High School in Barton-under-Needwood.

“The family of the teenage girl has been informed and they are being supported by officers from our family liaison unit.

“We are also in contact with the school and our colleagues at Staffordshire Police, who are understandably devastated as this occurred while their students were on a school trip.”

Witnesses

Anyone who witnessed the collision and has not already spoken to police should call 101 and ask for the Collision Investigation Unit.

The ambulance service said in a statement: “There were 25 patients, from the minibus. One of whom, a teenage girl, had suffered serious injuries in the collision and unfortunately it immediately became apparent that nothing could be done to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene.

“A second teenage girl received treatment at the scene for minor injuries and was transported to Heartlands Hospital for further assessment.”

The ambulance service added: “A further 19 children were discharged at the scene together with four adults, which included the minibus driver. The lorry driver, a man, was also assessed and discharged at the scene with having avoided injury.”
