Simon Weston to lead Scotland’s Circular Economy Fund
Simon Weston from the UK’s paper confederation appointed chair of Scotland’s Circular Economy fund
Zero Waste Scotland has appointed Simon Weston from the UK’s paper confederation as chair of Scotland’s Circular Economy fund.
The organisation has £18 million to spend on projects relating to the circular economy, with the money coming from the European Regional development fund and the Scottish Government.
SMEs and Social enterprise organisations interested in exploring new markets for circular economy products and services, developing and adopting innovative business models or developing innovative technologies to support a circular economy, have been invited to submit proposals.
Louise McGregor, head of circular economy, Zero Waste Scotland, said: “The circular economy is an innovation opportunity for businesses to create new revenue streams and reduce key business risks.
“Our Circular Economy Investment Fund can help Scottish SMEs to seize this opportunity. Bringing Simon on board to Chair the fund will give us unique industry insight to help maximise this fantastic opportunity.”
Simon Weston commented: “I am delighted to have the chance to support the development of the Circular Economy in Scotland in such a direct way and look forward to working with colleagues in Zero Waste Scotland to promote this opportunity to Scottish enterprises.”

Helistrat appoints head of sustainability
Nathan Gray, Helistrat’s new head of sustainability
Sustainability consultancy and contract management partner Helistrat, has promoted Nathan Gray to head of sustainability.
The new position has been developed to optimise the sustainability performance of both Helistrat as a business and its customers.
Helistrat said alongside his existing responsibilities, Mr Gray will lead the formulation of a new sustainability vision, mission and set of operating principles, together with the strategy to deliver and measure performance against them.
Commenting on the appointment Helistrat’s CEO, Harvey Laud, said: “This new role will provide us with a consistent set of principles that we can implement both internally and externally to minimise our collective environmental impact and ensure we make best use of the valuable secondary resources for which we are all responsible.”
Nathan Gray added: “I am delighted to be raising the bar of sustainability within my portfolio of responsibilities. We have always adopted a mindset that the material we mange is far more than waste and this new role will ensure we continue to broaden our horizons and support the development of a more circular economy.”

UKWSL announces new board of directors

Waste and recycling brokerage, UKWSL has announced a move to a board structure under recently appointed managing director Max Kanda.
The new board, which will be led by Max Kanda, will see a number of internal promotions: Jane Mellor moves from group financial controller to finance director, Rachel Mann to operations director, Matt Batey to IM&T director, Les Clayton to SHEQ director and Cathy Cook to people director. The only external appointment sees Roland Archer become the new sales director.
Commenting on his new Board, Max Kanda says: “UKWSL has set itself an ambitious five-year plan, one that will see annual sales more than double. It was therefore imperative that there was not only a change of culture in the business but that we had the right team in place to deliver on that plan.”
“I have every confidence that we are now in a position to maximise the opportunities that growth will bring and face the inevitable challenges that also lie ahead.”

Renewi appoints human resources director
European waste business Renewi plc (formerly Shanks) has announced the appointment of Francis Schröder as human resources (HR) director and a member of the Renewi Executive Committee, effective 1 July 2017.
Ms Schröder joins Renewi from FedEx International, where she is currently vice president for performance and development. According to Renewi, at FedEx, Ms Schröder has been involved in the integration programme resulting from the company’s acquisition of TNT Express in 2016.
And, she had previously been director of people development and transformation at TNT Express.
Peter Dilnot, Chief Executive Officer of Renewi, said: “I am very pleased to welcome Francis to Renewi and to our Executive Committee. Her experience of post-merger integration at FedEx and her previous experience at other leading global organisations will be highly valuable to Renewi.”
