Highlander completes £150,000 investment
Glasgow-based paper recycler Highlander International Recycling has announced the completion of a £150,000 investment into its security shredding operations within its East Kilbride depot.
According to Highlander, the investment includes a dedicated PALL baler capable of processing 30 tonnes per day of shredded paper bales, an Ulster 45 short-bed shredder and feed conveyor and a major refurbishment of existing machinery including a product destruction hammer-mill and two feed conveyors.
The company said it also installed a comprehensive dust extraction unit for all machines along with new CCTV system for the operations to complement the existing cameras in place, for the rest of the depot operations.
Director of Highlander, Stephen Duffy, said: “With this investment into our shredding and destruction facilities we can now offer a fully secure, destruction and recycling service for all paper based materials from bags of confidential waste to full loads of branded papers, books or catalogues on pallets and can offer customers the chance to view the process from the comfort of our new viewing area.
“This offers additional peace of mind while never compromising the security of the materials entrusted to us by our valued customers and of course, all operations are accredited to EN15713 standards and subject to external inspection as a member of UKSSA.”

Wastecycle wins auctioneer recycling contract
Wastecycle has entered into a partnership with commercial auctioneer John Pye, to carry out waste and recycling services on behalf of the company.
Wastecycle will provide waste bins and Roll On, Roll Offs for John Pye’s Nottingham head office.
Mike Vitale, John Pye’s Nottingham general auction manager, said: “With our previous supplier taking up to two weeks to collect a full Roll-on, Roll-off container, we needed a partner which could deliver a high-quality service and ensure timely collections,”
“Wastecycle is a local company, with an excellent reputation and has offered to collect containers within 24 hours, which is going to be fantastic for us.
Mr Vitae added: “Whilst we have only just started working with Wastecycle, we have been really impressed with their service. In fact, I would go as far as saying they’ve been the best recycling company we’ve worked with!”
According to Wastecycle, the company processes more than 500,000 tonnes of materials each year, with over 95% of waste being recycled or recovered. Part of DCC Environmental, Wastecycle operates from sites in both Nottingham and Leicester.

Hubbub and Lucozade unveil litter initiative
Environmental charity hubbub has teamed up with Lucozade to unveil its ‘Trashconverter Van’, which it said was designed to take action on roadside litter in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Hubbub said the Trashconverter Van will tour the Forest of Dean during May, an area which it says suffers from “high rates” of roadside litter.
According to Hubbub, the van accepts waste in exchange for food, flowers and hot drinks, to “highlight the issue and nudge positive behaviour”.
The charity said 100 replica wild flowers made entirely from lay-by litter will also be displayed with the intention of encouraging members of the public not to litter.
Trewin Restorick, chief executive and co-founder of Hubbub, said: “Lay-by litter louts blight the beautiful natural landscape, dumping 250 tonnes of rubbish each year in the Forest of Dean, some of which takes several thousand years to decompose.
“So we’re taking the unusual step of swapping rubbish for rewards to promote positive behaviours and encourage everyone to dispose of their litter properly.”
According to Hubbub, its last Love Your Forest roadside litter campaign, Communitrees, reduced litter by more than 30%, and proved that behaviour change campaigns “make a huge difference”.

DS Smith supports Resource Association manifesto
Recycling and waste management firm DS Smith has pledged its support to the Resource Association’s 2017 Manifesto for Resources.
Released earlier this month (4 May), the document aims to create greater understanding of ‘circular economy’ principles and calls for clarity on political commitment to sustainability in the run-up to the General Election in June (see letsrecycle.com story).
The document outlines a 10-point strategy towards realising a circular economy. DS Smith’s sales and purchasing manager currently serves as chairman of the Resource Association
Mathew Prosser, UK managing director at DS Smith Recycling, said: “With natural resources dwindling and commodity prices exposed to the volatility of the markets, working towards a circular economy is becoming ever-more essential.
“In the run-up to next month’s General Election, now is the perfect time to act. We’re calling for a clear political commitment to sustainability and hope the Resource Association’s Manifesto will act as a clarion call for immediate action.”
Ray Georgeson, chief executive of the Resource Association, added: “In producing our Manifesto for Resources and identifying ten steps towards a circular economy, our desire is to remind our politicians how important this is, with its twin benefits to the environment and economy.”
