Yorkshire-based waste management firm Yorwaste has entered into a partnership with North Yorkshire county council to manage and operate all of the authority’s household waste recycling centres (HWRCs).
Yorwaste, which is jointly owned by North Yorkshire and City of York councils, will manage all 20 HWRCs across North Yorkshire.

The company will take on the 84 staff who were employed by the council’s previous contractor Kier, tasked with managing the sites. The agreement comes into effect from tomorrow (April 1).
HWRCs are provided for residents deposit materials for recycling, reuse, composting or disposal, and the sites take a variety of items including hardcore and rubble, plasterboard and tyres for which there is a small charge.
Sites are located at towns across the county including Harrogate, Leeming Bar, Ripon, Seamer Carr, Selby and Skipton.
Yorwaste
Yorwaste, which claims to manage over half a million tonnes of waste per year, offers collection services and in-house waste processing solutions including industrial and commercial material waste recycling facilities. The company also provides green waste composting, wood recycling, liquid waste treatment and renewable energy generation.
The company already manages the processing recyclables on behalf of four North Yorkshire councils including Harrogate, Craven, Hambleton and Richmondshire under a contract awarded in January 2016 (see letsrecycle.com story). The waste firm also holds a number of local contracts to process dry recyclables on behalf of Ryedale, Scarborough and Redcar & Cleveland borough councils.

“This means we are able to use the latest technology to separate and sort different waste. Significantly, the whole emphasis is on recycling as much material as possible and maximising its value.”
Ian Fielding, the county council’s assistant director for waste and countryside services, said: “Our household waste recycling centres provide an important and already effective service and users should notice little change on site. The centres will continue to provide re-use, recycling and composting facilities for a wide range of materials.
“However, under the new partnership we will challenge Yorwaste to develop the network further to improve performance and customer satisfaction. It will also divert even more waste from landfill and save money.”
