The Welsh Government has announced today (10 March) the launch of a £6.5 million fund for businesses to boost recycling infrastructure within the country.
Named the ‘Circular Economy Capital Investment Fund’ the £6.5m support package, which will begin in 2019, is being funded entirely through Welsh Government budgets.
According to the Welsh Government, the fund will build on the £14m Accelerating Reprocessing Infrastructure Development (ARID) project which ran between 2011 and 2015, and was funded by the European Regional Development Fund and coordinated by WRAP Cymru.
Companies to have received funding through the ARID programme include South Wales Wood Recycling, Scott Waste Management
The latest round of funding will provide support for assisting commercial collection companies to “improve segregated collection” to provide “better quality recyclate” for reprocessing, the Welsh Government has claimed.

And, finance will also be available for projects which improve the use of recycled content in products manufactured in Wales and those which increase recycling in hospitality, tourism and food services businesses.
Improving coverage of ‘Recycling on the Go’ infrastructure in Wales will also be included in the fund, as supporting service changes to enhance the capture of materials for reuse at Household Waste Recycling Centres.
Announcing the funding Wales’ Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths, said: “The £6.5m fund I am announcing today underlines our commitment to moving towards a Circular Economy. This will help businesses save money by becoming more resource efficient and resilient, an approach that will deliver numerous environmental benefits including less waste and reduced CO2 emissions.
“We are proud if Wales were an EU member state, we would be fourth in terms of the amount we recycle. We will continue to advocate the widespread adoption of a Circular Economy among businesses and our European partners as we aim towards the ambitious targets we have set ourselves in Towards Zero Waste.”
