Collards opens scrap metal site
Hampshire-based demolition and waste management company R Collard Limited has announced it will be opening a metal recycling site in Wokingham.
This will complement its existing waste recycling operation and expand the recycling capabilities of R Collard. According to R Collard, the new site will bring the processing of metal waste in-house giving the company “greater control” over the processing of materials.
The facility, located in Toutley Road, Wokingham, gives R Collard the capacity to recycle metal from its own in-house demolition projects, from wastes tipped at its five sites and from skip-hire customers.
Robert Collard, founder and danaging director of R Collard Ltd, said: “It is our first step into the world of metal recycling. It is a fantastic opportunity which compliments the waste infrastructure and demolition requirements for the R Collard Group.”

LCF grant for Denham Park café
Grundon Waste Management has provided a £100,000 grant, via the Landfill Communities Fund, to build a new roof to be added to the renovated terrace at the Colne Valley Park Visitor Centre café in Denham Country Park, Buckinghamshire.
The funding was also used to build an adventure playground area which opened last summer, and has already proved a big hit by nearly doubling visitor numbers.
Anthony Foxlee-Brown, Grundon’s marketing & communications manager, commented: “We are always delighted to be able to help support the communities in and around our locations and this is a great example of an initiative which benefits local people. We have no doubt that the playground and the new-look café will be extremely popular with young and old alike.”
Overall, more than £150,000 has been invested in the project, which has included the refurbishment of the café and toilets, and the introduction of a new nature trail in the park. Other contributors have included Heathrow Community Fund and Heart of Bucks.
Debbie Valman, project manager at Groundwork South, said: “We have been delighted to bring so much investment into the park and the centre and to see so many people enjoying the new facilities.”
Through the Landfill Communities Fund, Grundon is an ongoing supporter of Colne Valley Park. The Fund helps benefit the lives of people who live close to landfill sites by awarding grants for environmental, heritage and community projects.

Andusia celebrates fifth anniversary
Refuse derived fuel exporter Andusia Recovered Fuels Limited has marked its fifth anniversary.
The company is one of the largest exporters of RDF to the continent and has exported more than 800,000 tonnes of material since its establishment in 2012. The company, based in Hertfordshire, employs 13 staff and has sales of £18.1 million.
Commenting on the company’s growth, director Steve Burton, said: “When Stewart [Brackenbury] and I started Andusia RFL five years ago, we could not have foreseen how successful the enterprise would be. Commentators were predicting that the RDF sector would only last three-five years, but as can be seen from the Environment Agency figures, the sector is continuing to rise six years after the first RDF was exported, and Andusia continue to be a major contributor to the sector.”
The company also has plans to expand its portfolio of materials handled. Mr Burton added: “Whilst RDF exports into the historical European countries looks to have started to level-off, there are still significant opportunities further afield for both RDF and other secondary fuels, particularly SRF. There is also a steadily developing market for waste fuels in the UK, which after a slow start is now really gaining serious momentum, and Andusia is in an excellent position to assist CHP developers secure the specific fuel supply they require.”

Envac to join ‘smart cities’ initiative
Automated waste collection specialist Envac AB has become one of the key organisations joined the ‘GrowSmarter’ initiative, to showcase ‘smart city’ solutions in energy, infrastructure and transport.

Envac will now play a key role in meeting GrowSmarter targets, which include reducing energy, greenhouse gas emissions and transport emissions by 60 per cent, when its technology is retrofitted into 300 apartments in Valla torg, an area that lies 8km south of Stockholm’s city centre.
Joakim Karlsson, chief executive at Envac AB, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in laying the foundations for sustainable growth and development throughout Europe. For almost five decades Envac has been increasing efficiencies and lowering the operational cost associated with waste collection and is proud to now have over 700 installations worldwide.”
