A fire has broken out at DS Smith’s paper recycling depot in Willenhall near Wolverhampton – which is believed to have started in machinery.
West Midlands Fire & Rescue Service was called to the recycling centre at Rose Hill Business Park at 10.45 this morning (1 March).
More than 30 firefighters and a total of five appliances are on site to tackle the ‘severe’ blaze, which DS Smith has described as “under control”.
According to the company, early reports suggest the fire started from machinery running papers for recycling, though the source of ignition is still under investigation.
DS Smith confirmed that all staff and visitors have been safely evacuated and accounted for, with no injuries reported.
A statement issued by the firm states: “All operations are currently suspended and all incoming vehicle movements are being safely diverted from site, but the fire has been contained and has not spread to any buildings on or near the site.
“Health and safety is of paramount importance to DS Smith and the company is working with the relevant authorities to help investigate the cause of the fire.”
