The UK’s largest paper manufacturing and recycling business, DS Smith, has announced Jochen Behr as its new Head of Recycling.
The appointment comes after the sudden departure of Dr Jim Malone who held the post until this month.
In a statement today (21 February), the company said: “We are delighted to announce that Jochen Behr is joining the management team of DS Smith Recycling. Jochen will join as the new Head of Recycling, from February 27th 2017, reporting to Colin McIntyre, CEO of Paper & Recycling.”
DS Smith explained that Mr Behr has “a wealth of experience in general management, finance and sales, as well as extensive experience in running multi-national divisions”.
He worked most recently with the Brambles-owned pallet and logistics business CHEP Europe, firstly as head of European and global key accounts and strategy and more recently as country general manager for Central and Eastern Europe.
Europe
Mr Behr’s appointment is a move by DS Smith to strengthen its activities in continental Europe where it is pursuing an aggressive growth strategy with the UK market relatively stable although facing completion on the export front.
Mr Behr is a native German speaker and on social media he notes that he has been “recognized as a top performer who possesses exceptional analytical and problem solving skills, excellent communication and negotiation skills and the ability to achieve and exceed challenging business targets”.
DS Smith said that Mr Behr fills “the vacancy left by Jim Malone who has advised of his intentions to pursue his career outside of DS Smith.”
It noted that Dr Malone “has played a significant part in the growth of DS Smith Recycling over the last 18 years, in what was his second spell with the company.” He had originally joined the Severnside recycling business (now part of DS Smith) back in 1987 before working in other industries including British Steel.
And, the company added that DS Smith “would like to thank Jim for his contribution to our business, and we wish him all the best for the future”.
Cardboard guru
In 2011, DS Smith described Dr Malone as the company’s “very own cardboard guru”. In that year he won the (Bureau of International Recycling) Paper Division’s Papyrus Award for his services to the paper and packaging industry.
The company also noted that Dr Malone is one of the industry’s “most respected experts on fibre packaging, playing a key role in a number of paper recycling initiatives.”
DS Smith is a major producer of cardboard materials at its Kemsley mill in Kent and has a large number of supermarket contracts both for recycling and the supply of cardboard boxes. It also sources cardboard and mixed papers from local authority sources.
