Glass recycler Recresco has been fined £50,000 after one of its workers suffered crush injuries from a roller shutter door at its sorting facility in South Wales.
The waste business was also ordered to pay costs of £9,944 at a hearing at Newport Magistrates’ Court on Friday (10 February), following the incident at Recresco’s Springvale Industrial Estate site in Cwmbran, Torfaen.
The court heard how a male worker, who has not been named, was injured when the door’s roller barrel fell on him at the Cwmbran plant in April 2015.
The incident resulted in the worker suffering three cracked ribs and a damaged spleen, causing him to miss eight weeks of work.
HSE
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found that none of the electronically operated roller shutter doors at the company’s site had been adequately maintained to keep the equipment safe.
Recresco pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
Speaking after the case, HSE inspector Lee Schilling, said: “This case highlights the importance of regular pro-active maintenance and inspection of work equipment, including roller shutter doors, to ensure equipment does not deteriorate to the extent that it puts people at risk.
“In this case Recresco failed to effectively maintain their equipment and it could have easily resulted in a fatal injury.”
Cwmbran
Recresco opened its Cwmbran plant in 2011, designed with capacity to process up to 100,000 tonnes of glass per year. Materials collected by the company are sorted by colour and used in remelt applications.
The business also operates facilities in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, and Swanscombe in Kent.
When contacted by letsrecycle.com, Recresco declined to comment on the prosecution.
